Facts about Scalextric slot cars
Scalextric slot cars first appeared 1952 under the brandname "Scalex". The first modern slot car track was created 1965.
There are five generations of Scalextric tracks in scale 1:32:
1: 1952. Original track Mk.1, called the "rubber track"
2: 1965. Original track Mk.2 Also called "Scalextric Classic". The track was made in plastic and was held together by two integrated circular, spoon-shaped pins and sockets, Converter pieces were available to link the two types Mk.1 and Mk.2.
3: 2001. Scalextric Standard also called Scalextric Sport and replaced the Classic track. The surface is smoother than the Scalextric Classic track. The track connectors are square and slot into place unlike the ring shaped Classic track ones. Converter pieces are available to link to Classic track.
4: 2004. Scalextric Digital. A digital controlled slot car system. Up to 6 cars can race individually on the tracks. Advanced functions are available such as pic-stops, speed controls, breaks and change of track.
5: 2010. Scalextric Start. A simplified slot car track, only one straight and one curve type is available. The Start cars are fantasy models created by Scalextric. In this way Scalextric can reduce costs and you can buy a Scalextric track in scale 1:32 to an affordable price. Converter pieces are available to link to Scalextric Standard/Sport tracks.
